Green

Compute, set free.

Green is an open compute network secured by proof of compute. Every GPU that mines it becomes part of one market for matrix multiplication, the work behind every neural network, where anyone can buy compute without asking anyone's permission.

Computed in your browser just now: a small int8 product, checked the cheap way, and turned into a lottery ticket. A Green miner does the same with 256 × 256 tiles, hundreds of times a second.

What Green solves

AI runs on compute, and compute sits in a handful of data centres. To use it you need an account, a card, the right country and a provider's approval, and the price is whatever they set. Meanwhile millions of capable GPUs in homes, labs and studios sit idle most of the day.

Distributed

Any GPU or CPU, anywhere, can sell its compute. There is no company in the middle, no data centre to go through and no single place that can be switched off.

Free to use

Buying compute takes a wallet and nothing else: no sign-up, no approval, no region locks. A person, a research group or an autonomous AI agent pays the same way, at prices set by miners competing in the open.

Not wasted

Mining other coins burns electricity on hashes nobody needs. Green's mining is the same operation AI runs on, so the work that secures the network is compute someone can use.

Work someone needed

The work that secures Green is compute someone needed. We call it proof of compute: the network is paid for the compute it gives, and secured by that same compute.

Miners multiply matrices

A miner computes int8 matrix products, the operation GPUs run all day for AI. A digest of each product is a ticket in the block lottery. When buyers post jobs, their units are the miners' work.

Checking costs almost nothing

A product of n × n matrices takes n³ steps to compute and n² to check, with Freivalds' test. Nodes verify each other's work without redoing it, and a buyer never pays for a wrong result.

Compute you can buy

Pay miners product by product through payment channels, or post a whole job on chain. Your data can be split or secret-shared so no miner sees the whole problem.

Paid for work, not luck

99% of each block's reward goes to shares: proofs of work 128 times easier than a block, about one every tenth of a second across the network. Every share is paid, so a miner's income follows the work it does, block after block.

A single GPU earns several times a minute. Nobody needs a pool to get a steady income, and finding the block itself is worth about one share.

About 128 shares, each paid; the finder's part is one more.

GRN, the network's unit

There will never be more than 21 million GRN, and none is ever created out of nothing. All of them start in the protocol's reserve and are paid out to miners a little each block, on a smooth curve with no halving cliffs.

Fees are kept tiny on purpose. Part of every fee goes back to the reserve, so miners are paid for as long as the network is used, and part is burned, so the supply shrinks slowly with use. One GRN divides into a hundred million units.

Run a node

Your node keeps its own copy of the chain and checks every block itself. Your wallet stays on your computer: coins can only be spent with your key.

  1. Install

Python 3.11 or newer. The gpu extra mines on AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs; without it Green mines on the CPU.

    pip install "green-grn[gpu] @ https://github.com/ErtungaYusuf/green/archive/refs/heads/main.zip"
  2. Make a wallet

Write down the 24-word recovery phrase it shows once. Anyone who sees it can take your coins; nobody can recover it for you.

    grn --data green wallet new
  3. Join and mine

With no genesis file of its own, a node joins the Green network and finds its peers. --portmap asks your router to let other nodes reach you.

grn --data green node --mine --gpu --portmap
  4. Use it in the browser

Green Hub is a wallet, a compute market and a mining dashboard in one page, on your own computer.

    pip install "green-hub @ https://github.com/ErtungaYusuf/green-hub/archive/refs/heads/main.zip"
    green-hub --data green

While the network is young

A new proof-of-work network has little work behind it, and GPUs can be rented. Until enough independent miners join, the founder's node signs a checkpoint about every minute, and no node accepts a chain that leaves the latest one out, however much work it has. Even a majority of the mining power could rewrite only the last minute and a half.

The founder cannot move or create coins or make an invalid block valid. The checkpoint period ends after a year at the latest, or earlier when the founder ends it; from then on the chain with the most work decides alone.

Built in the open

Every line of Green is public: twenty-two security reviews with the attacks they close, over three hundred tests run on Linux, Windows and macOS, and the full rules written down so anyone can build their own implementation.
